Marie's father had overextended his visit...
Marie’s father had overextended his visit and he was now telling Marie that he wanted to stay even longer to “make sure his little girl was okay.” The two decided to go on a walk to the local bodega because they were just now able to leave the apartment. The remnants from the storm were cleared from the streets, and the sun was starting to poke out from the thick grey clouds that seemed to have wrapped the town in an eerie blanket for days.
On their way to the grocery store Mr. Matías noticed a commotion at the library. “Marie look at all those people,” he exclaimed as he glanced through the huge glass library pane windows.
“It’s probably nothing dad, just one of the boring speakers the town is always promoting. Come on we need to go the store before they close,” Marie sighed, slightly annoyed and on edge, as usual.
However, Mr. Matías loved the excitement and buzz or energy that crowds often entailed so he pulled Marie into the library as he rambled on about how he wasn’t going to be in America much longer. Marie’s father hustled his way through the crowd, dragging Marie along with him, to the front to see who everyone was listening to so eagerly. To their surprise it was Ryan Lochte who Marie vaguely remembered watching in Colombia with her mother at an Olympics party with all the other wealthy families years ago. The two decided to stay as Marie oddly recognized a large number of Pointe Place residents. Lochte’s monologue seemed to be wrapping up and noticed everyone around her seemed to be in a trance, captivated by his words.
Lochte passionately spewed to the crowd, “Sometimes you may seem disconnected from yourself and even disconnected from who you once were. You will always try to search and find that person who you once were but your searching will be never ending until you realize that your past self can no longer be who you are in the present. Some things, some hardships, even some joyous moments you must let go of in order to be who you want to be now. If there is something you don’t like in your life then only you have the power to change it.”
These exact words caused Marie to realize that nothing with her father would ever change and she would never feel fully happy again until she made a decision; let her dad go for good or keep him in her life forever.
